Fuel Door Solenoid / Hatch Lock

I had struggled to come up with the best way to mount the fuel door solenoid. I had previously made a bracket so I could use some 3/4 x 3/4 inch steel tube to mount the solenoid. I also made an access hole in the rear aluminum so I could mount the solenoid in the rear and still service it. When I had everything in place, it became obvious that it wouldn’t work as I expected. The original cross tube would interfere with the tail lights. It would also wouldn’t sit flat against against the other tubing. So I put off mounting the solenoid until I came up with a better idea. When I looked at the solution again tonight. I realized that I would have to make some small changes but have a working solution.

I decided that I would have the fuel solenoid mount inside the hatch area a little. This would require an aluminum spacer for the access panel. It would also require me to make a false front to cover the intrusion into the hatch area. This wasn’t a big change as I already planned this for the drivers side which had the hatch lock and latch. I would then be able to mount some tubing with he bracket I made and attach it to the existing tubing and then support it by attaching it to the rear aluminum. I made the mounting point by using some coupler nuts and welding them into the steel tube.

The design worked and I was able to install the solenoid without any difficulties.

I checked to see if the cardboard mock-up of the hatch lock mount fitted correctly. It fits as expected, so I will sent the drawings off to the machine shop tomorrow.

Looks excellent, as usual. Happy New year. In the last picture of the hatch look, is it being held in that position so it will then mount through the body and be virtually flush with the body? Paul
